As evident from the picture on the home page, my first thoughts of finding food lead me to the garden. Food connects us to the natural world, our home. In fact, it is when our food does not make that connection that we lose something essential to our well being.
Those living in cities and apartments without a garden should not despair at this thought, however. There is a challenge to be met when what we eat is separated from us by roads and trucks, cardboard and plastic, time and geography.
Community gardens are one point of connection. There is a special joy in tending a few pots of herbs as the snow drifts and blows against the windows. The new leaves or thyme and sprigs of chive are the culmination of light, fresh water, and healthy soil. They grow despite the constraints living in pots, inside a building, devoid of breezes and unvarnished sunshine.
